GE created this visualization as a metaphor to illustrate their emphasis on engineering research on breaking systems for locomotives. This type of visualization is more of a marketing plot than a science visualization, but still it communicates data in a clear and engaging way. I feel that it’s relevant to understand science visualization from the perspective of a non-literal form of communication, as much of what we “know” about something is learned in this way. Science is about understanding the way things work, but humans are largely about seeking confirmation of things they already believe.
